Strategic finance & governance
Fractional Finance Advisory Retainer
Structural Integrity & Enterprise Financial Rigor
Early-stage businesses rarely fail because they lack ambition. They become fragile when growth outpaces the structures supporting it.
Lyra works with founders to create the financial visibility, decision architecture and organisational structure required to grow without making the founder the permanent shock absorber for the business.
We look at the business as one interconnected system - capital, governance, team and founder - identifying where responsibility, information or risk has become concentrated and building the minimum structure required for the organisation to function effectively.
The objective is enough structural integrity to create systemic flow, with financial leadership scaled to the business rather than a full-time executive hire.
Grow the business. Spare the founder.
Core scope and deliverables
Board-Level Financial Stewardship: Strategic financial guidance aligned with long-term enterprise growth, funding cycles, and investor expectations. This includes cash flow steering, capital efficiency and statutory governance.
Cash Flow Clarity & Runway Precision: Deep visibility into capital efficiency, working capital cycles, and 13-week cash forecasting.
Entity Governance & Risk Architecture: Safeguarding the enterprise through robust internal controls, policy design, and compliance frameworks.
Audit-Ready Operational Structures: Streamlining financial operations, shared services, and reporting systems to ensure seamless due diligence. Clear decision rights and scalable controls support the work.
Administrative Bandwidth Protection: Removing financial and structural ambiguity so executive focus remains entirely on strategic execution.
1 See the system
Early-stage companies do not need corporate infrastructure imposed on them prematurely. They need enough structure to reveal what matters.
Begin by understanding the whole operating system before agreeing priorities.
Business: cash position and runway; revenue and economic model; cost structure; financial systems; commercial assumptions; key operational dependencies.
Team: founder roles; decision rights; financial accountability; ownership and equity structure; communication and governance mechanisms.
Founder: concentration of responsibility; decision bottlenecks; workload; key-person dependency; areas where the founder is compensating for weaknesses elsewhere in the system.
A concise System Health & 90-Day Priorities Map.
This establishes which parts of the FD scope the client needs first.
2 Create structural integrity
The first objective is stability: the minimum viable financial and governance structure needed to make good decisions.
Financial integrity: 13-week cash visibility; burn and runway; commitments and liabilities; simple management information; reliable bookkeeping architecture; spending controls; core commercial metrics.
Make the financial reality of the business visible so that decisions have a reliable foundation.
3 Establish systemic flow
Once the structure is sound, information and decisions need to move through the business without everything passing through the founder.
Clarify who decides what, who owns each number, which decisions need founder agreement, what information is required, what can be delegated, and which matters belong at board or investor level. Identify where decisions become stuck.
For an early-stage founder, good governance means fewer unnecessary decisions reaching them.
4 Protect founder capacity
Founders often act as CEO, salesperson, strategist, fundraiser, recruiter, approver, escalation point and institutional memory. Concentrating these roles makes founder capacity a business risk.
Identify decision overload, knowledge bottlenecks, gaps in delegation and unnecessary operational involvement. Determine which decisions can be systematised and which work should move elsewhere.
What does the founder uniquely need to hold - and what can the system hold instead?
5 Enable intelligent decisions
Finance exists to enable decisions, not simply to generate reports.
Can we hire? Assess runway impact, the downside case, expected return, timing, alternatives and trigger points.
Should we raise now? Consider runway, milestones, valuation implications, dilution, capital requirements and readiness.
Can we spend £50k on product development? Consider opportunity cost, cash impact, strategic dependency and available alternatives.
The value lies in judgement that supports decisions.
6 Prepare the business for capital
Help founders explain where money has gone, what each additional £1 creates, which milestones new capital buys, when the next capital requirement arises, what assumptions drive the plan and what happens if they are wrong.
An investor model should express the founders’ understanding of the business.
